Laser Prostatectomy

Endoscopic prostate surgery has traditionally been done using electrocautery devices. This method, also known as the TURP (Transurethral resection of the prostate) is very effective and remains the gold standard. However there are two major limitations of the TURP- bleeding and fluid absorption. These may not be crucial in the average patient undergoing prostate surgery but may be critical in those with heart or kidney problems where small volumes of fluid absorption could strain the heart or load the kidneys or small volumes of blood loss may be poorly tolerated. Hence, in these situations laser prostate surgery can reduce the risks of surgery. A bonus is the fact that most patients can be discharged from the hospital much faster. One must of course, balance the additional costs of performing laser surgery against the benefits. Recent refinements in laser prostate surgery have made this a safe and effective method of treatment.

Dr Sanjay Sinha has a special interest in Laser Prostate Surgery and is regularly performing laser prostatectomy.
